What is the dental implant process step by step?

If you are considering dental implants, you may be wondering what the treatment process actually involves. While every patient is different, dental implant treatment generally follows a clear, structured pathway designed to ensure long-term success.
Here is a step-by-step overview of what to expect for a standard single unit implant to replace one tooth.
Step 1: Consultation and assessment
Your implant journey begins with a comprehensive consultation. We assess your oral health, review X-rays or 3D scans, and determine whether you have sufficient bone to support an implant. A personalised treatment plan is created based on your needs.
Step 2: Implant placement
The dental implant, a small titanium post, is placed into the jawbone during a minor surgical procedure. This acts as an artificial tooth root. The procedure is performed with local anaesthetic or sedation to ensure comfort.
Step 3: Healing and bone integration
Over the following weeks to months, the implant fuses with the jawbone in a process called osseointegration. This creates a stable foundation for the replacement tooth. Temporary teeth may be provided while healing takes place for other types of implants.
Step 4: Abutment and crown placement
Once the implant has integrated, a connector piece called an abutment is attached. A custom-made crown is then fitted on top, designed to look, feel, and function like a natural tooth.
Step 5: Ongoing care and maintenance
After treatment is complete, regular check-ups and good oral hygiene help ensure the implant remains healthy and long-lasting.
For other types of dental implants we do, the process is similar, as the number of implants required vary between each implant type based on your treatment plan that Dr. Gabriel recommends after your consultation.
