Looking after your dental implant properly after surgery plays a big part in how well it heals and how long it lasts. Fortunately, aftercare is straightforward and easy to manage with the right habits and guidance.
Immediately After Surgery
In the first 24 to 48 hours, it’s important to take it easy. You may experience some mild swelling, bruising, or discomfort, this is completely normal. Stick to soft foods, avoid hot drinks, and try not to disturb the area. If you’ve been given any medications or instructions, be sure to follow them carefully.
Keeping the Area Clean
Good oral hygiene is essential. Gently brush your teeth, avoiding the surgical site for the first few days. You may be advised to use a special mouth rinse or warm saltwater to keep the area clean without irritating it. As healing progresses, you can return to your normal brushing and flossing routine, making sure to keep the implant site as clean as the rest of your mouth.
What to Avoid
Try to avoid smoking, alcohol, or very hard or sticky foods during the healing period, as these can slow down recovery or cause complications. It’s also best to avoid vigorous exercise for a few days after surgery to reduce swelling and help your body heal.
Follow-Up Visits Are Important
We’ll schedule check-ups to monitor your healing and make sure everything is progressing as it should. These visits are also a chance for us to give you tailored advice on caring for your implant long term.
Long-Term Care
Once healed, a dental implant functions just like a natural tooth. With regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups, your implant can last for many years. Treat it like you would a natural tooth, and it will reward you with reliable performance and a healthy smile.
